In NSW primary schools, the study of a language is optional.
Language study allows students to develop communication skills, learn about languages as systems and explore the relationship between language and culture. Students engage with the linguistic and cultural diversity of societies and reflect on their understanding of social interactions.
Mandarin
Currently, Mandarin Chinese is spoken by over 1 Billion people around the world, about one fifth of the global population. Each year, more and more students around the world whose mother tongue is not Mandarin are studying it with enthusiasm and success.
Studies have shown that learning a second language promotes brain growth, improves attention and boost memory.
In 2015, Nundle Public School is offering each child the opportunity to read, write and speak Mandarin Chinese. Lessons have been scheduled on a weekly basis:
Years 3/4/5/6 on Monday afternoon
Years K/1/2 on Tuesday afternoon
Learning Mandarin will not only benefit our students in speaking a different language but will also enter them into a whole new world of the Chinese culture.
